and 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo each made a triumphant return to action Monday night when the San Francisco 49ers‘ backups engineered a 24-15 preseason win over the Denver Broncos.Sanders’ comeback overshadowed Garoppolo’s return. After thoughts of his double-ankle surgery nearly brought him to tears in the tunnel before the game DeMarcus Ware Jersey , Sanders caught a 5-yard pass from Joe Flacco on the Broncos’ first offensive play and added a 19-yard run on a reverse in his first game since tearing his left Achilles tendon in practice last December.Article continues below ...He also hauled in a 45-yard reception that was erased by left tackle Garett Bolles‘ holding penalty, but what he lamented most was not scoring on the reverse.“The old ‘E’ would have scored,” Sanders said.Bolles’ penalty didn’t detract from Sanders’ big night.“Unfortunately, we got the holding call,” Sanders said. “But it felt good to be back on the football field, making plays and exciting the crowd. This is my adrenaline rush.”Garoppolo was glad to get back on the field, too, even though he went just 1 for 6 for zero yards and an interception in his first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury last September.“It’s something I haven’t done in a year obviously, so I’ve got to knock the rust off,” Garoppolo said. “Thankfully we have a short week this week so we can bounce back quickly. First step of getting back into it.”Garoppolo’s first pass was knocked down by defensive lineman Shelby Harris and his second one was intercepted by cornerback Isaac Yiadom when he was pressured by Bradley Chubb. His third pass was tipped and cornerback De’Vante Bausby broke up his fourth attempt.Chris Harris Jr. pressured Garoppolo into an incompletion from his end zone before Garoppolo finally completed a screen pass to running back Matt Breida Shannon Sharpe Jersey , who was corralled by Shelby Harris at the San Francisco 6 for no gain.“It’s a big hurdle to get out there for the first time but we haven’t seen any issues with the knee,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “I forget about it except he’s wearing a brace.”The knee wasn’t on Garoppolo’s mind, either.“I wasn’t thinking about it so I was happy about that,” Garoppolo said. “It didn’t bother me too much.”Broncos safety Justin Simmons said that while he was pleased with how Denver stifled Garoppolo, the quarterback’s stat line was by no means a barometer of where he is in his comeback.“It helps because we practiced against him twice. I mean, he still has it,” Simmons said. “You watched him in practice and he made a lot of nice throws, he made a lot of nice reads and he helped us big-time in our development throughout the week.”Based on their work together over three days, Simmons said football fans should expect big things from the Niners‘ offense and Denver’s defense this season.LOCKED OUTBroncos rookie QB Drew Lock jammed his right thumb when he was sacked on the first series of the second half, cutting short his most significant action of the preseason in his quest to win the backup job Karl Mecklenburg Jersey , and Kevin Hogan finished up.Coach Vic Fangio said he thought Lock’s injury was minor, and Lock said X-rays were negative.“I jammed my thumb playing basketball a thousand times,” Lock said, adding he hoped to play next weekend.GHOST OF PEYTON MANNINGThis marked Flacco’s first game in front of his new home crowd.“It was a lot of fun. I know it’s not a full stadium yet (13,447 no-shows),” Flacco said. “One thing I really noticed: you could tell Peyton played here because when the offense has the ball, man, you could hear a pin drop. That was a little different, to be honest with you.“It’s always quiet obviously for the home team when they’re on offense, but that was a little extra. I feel like I heard my voice echoing in the stadium Gary Zimmerman Jersey ,” Flacco said. “So, I was a little thrown off by that.”INJURIES: Broncos first-rounder Noah Fant injured his right foot when DB Tarvarius Moore fell on him in the second quarter. DL Damontre Moore (thumb) and FS Adrian Colbert (hamstring) were among the 49ers hurt. Fangio said Fant’s injury appeared to be minor.UP NEXT49ers: Play at the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night.Broncos: Play at the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night. According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos have hired T.C. McCartney to be the team’s Quarterbacks coach under Offensive Coordinator Rich Scangarello. They have also hired former Wagner Offensive Coordinator Rob Calabrese to be an Offensive Assistant to Scangarello as well. McCartney served as an Offensive Assistant under Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco for the past two years and spent a total of four years on the 49ers staff. So Scangarello is bringing in another Shanahan disciple with him to Denver. He also comes with a Colorado connection as well. McCartney is the son of Sal Aunese and the grandson of former University of Colorado coaching icon Bill McCartney. So it is a bit of a homecoming for him as well. Now, the 29-year-old McCartney will be given the big of task of working with the Broncos quarterbacks which may include a top ten selection in the 2019 NFL Draft(aka Drew Lock). Here is how I see this hire going forward for the Broncos. If Scangarello does as well as the Broncos hope, he will have a Head Coaching gig in the near future. So they would like to have an in-house replacement on the staff ready to take over if/when that occurrence happens. This move also plants the Kyle Shanahan offensive system seed with the Denver Broncos. Scangarello will get the ball rolling and McCartney will continue to learn and potentially take over down the road because of positive circumstances. The other interesting hire reportedly announced today is Rob Calabrese as an Offensive Assistant to Rich Scangarello. Calabrese served as Scangarello’s Running Back’s coach at Wagner while he was the Offensive Coordinator. He eventually replaced Scangarello as Wagner’s Offensive Coordinator and now will follow him to the Denver Broncos. Here is what Wagner’s Head Coach Jason Houghtaling had to say about Rob Calabrese back in 2017 once it was announced he was replacing Scangarello as the teams Offensive Coordinator. So we have two of Scangarello’s people joining the Broncos staff. Two coaches who have grown with and under him as coaches and two who have bits of knowledge of Kyle Shanahan’s offensive. It’s clear that they are trying to bring his offensive system to(back) the Broncos, but can they do that without the man himself? Can his disciples do just as well, if not better, with his own system? TIme will tell.
